Campaigners protest against planned south-west London NHS cuts

Surrey Comet: Protesters march to campaign against cuts to NHS South West London Protesters march to campaign against cuts to NHS South West London

Protesters campaigning against planned cuts to health services in south-west London marched through Kingston on Saturday.

Organisers said there were about 150 people, including representatives from Unison and the Richmond and Twickenham Green Party, taking part in the demonstration.

They were protesting plans to close two accident and emergency and two maternity departments in the south-west London area under the Better Services Better Value review.

Julie Reay, of campaign group Health Alert Kingston, said: “I thought it went very well. People in the town centre were clapping, cheering, and things like that. People joined us as we were marching.”

Two of south west London and north Surrey’s hospitals – Kingston, St Helier, Epsom, Croydon – are threatened but St George’s Hospital Tooting is currently exempt from the changes.

Kingston Hospital’s accident and emergency and maternity units are not currently threatened, but it stands to lose its long-term children’s ward Sunshine.

A consultation on plans for closure is due after Easter.

Yes there were 150 people in the march on arrival at Guildhall, I counted them myself. Should have been a lot more though as hundreds of thousands will be adversely affected across the whole South West London Cuts. They might realise when it is too late and they are in dire need of medical help. So many friendly and kind people on the march; good atmosphere with everyone in good voice. Thank you Claudia for giving me the benefit of your company during the march so improving the experience to a pleasant and worthwhile afternoon. Thanks too to the police for their neutral professionalism allowing us the freedom to make our feelings known the the Kingston shoppers while safeguarding our well-being and to the organisers who enabled it all to happen. Now we need NHS decision-makers with their ears and eyes switched on to realise the folly of the downgrading plans.

Did Ed Davey MP join the march? I'm sure he has a petition you could sign.
