New Malden could have new street furniture, public art and a revamped rail station entrance, if fresh ideas for the town go ahead.

Ideas proposed by residents during a summer consultation are likely to be included in a new town centre strategy, which is being put together by Kingston Council.

The consultation found a number of improvements that could make the town centre more inviting.

Suggestions included directions to bus stops, welcome signs and furniture distinguishing New Malden from other parts of the borough.

A regular market and enhanced shop fronts was also suggested, along with improved access and better traffic flow through High Street.

Greater understanding between communities in New Malden, particularly the Korean community, was also found to be important to residents.

Neighbourhood manager Hannah Rees said: "This exhibition is about what people told us they wanted. What they would like to see New Malden as."

Although no funding has been secured yet, options include the Heritage Lottery fund and money from the Greater London Authority.

Collected ideas for the strategy can be seen in an exhibition at the Malden Centre from Saturday, December 8 to Friday, December 21.
