Thousands of commuters will need new Oyster cards after a fault on the network at the weekend.

Up to 40,000 cards are expected to have stopped working as a result of the problem on Saturday.

Transport for London (TfL) has had to call in 150 extra staff to help hand out replacement cards this morning in an attempt to stop long queues.

TfL said passengers would be allowed through barriers without paying if queues got too long.

But it said that only minority of people would have been affected by the problem.

The Oyster card system was down for around four hours, between 5.30am and 9.30am, on Saturday.

Some cards used during that time have now stopped working or incurred a fine.

Anyone who incurred a maximum fare or fine as a result of the fault will receive an automatic refund from Tuesday.

Commuters can pick up replacement cards from Tube stations.

TfL has launched an investigation into the network fault and say a statement will be released later this week.

solly, croydon says...
3:46pm Mon 14 Jul 08

I dont have an oyster card so instead i tried swiping my croydon library card to see if i could exploit the technical glitch. to my surprise, the turnstile began beeping like r2r2, all the lights in east croydon station dimmed and a loud, angry voice came over the loudspeaker system saying "step away from the turnstiles, step away from the turnstiles. this is not a test". everyone thought it was another derren brown trick and began cheering when suddenly the was a loud bang, a flash of light and hundreds and hundreds of free oystercard fell from overhead nets and everone received a free gift, five pounds in cash and a voucher to use at burger king. an amazing morning. i can't wait til tomorrow.
