The vandal behind the graffiti tag "Orgy" painted across railway stations and carriages in Epsom, Ewell and Nine Elms for the past five years has been jailed for nine months.

Neil Adam Davies, 24, of Harefield Avenue, Sutton, faced Southwark Crown Court today charged with causing £38,000 damage.

British Transport Police Detective Sergeant Paddy Kerr said Davies was responsible for spraying the tag Orgy, Orgie and orgies across south London and the southern home counties between December 2002 and June 2007.

"Davies was caught after a member of the public spotted him on the roof of garages near railway lines near Victoria station in June 2007," D Sgt Kerr said.

"Davies was seen fleeing the area into a white transit van and the member of the public noted the number plate and reported the incident to police.

"The vehicle was registered to Davies. His house was searched and more than 300 photographs featuring the tag Orgy and Orgies were found at the house. Other graffiti paraphernalia, including a face mask was also seized."

Davies was charged with two counts of causing criminal damage and pleaded guilty to the offences.

Sentencing Davies to nine months' jail, Judge David Higgins today said: "You spray graffiti on trains and have done so for a period of five years. You have caused criminal damage before. Whatever feeble gratification you gain from this, it simply will not be tolerated.

"Trains are not your property to damage. What you do is distasteful, disgraceful and profoundly antisocial."

The judge went on to describe Davies as "clearly an inadequate individual" who had shown little remorse for his offending.

He said that the matter was so serious that it warranted a custodial sentence. He also ordered that Davies' white transit van be forfeited.

The tags were most prominent in Epsom, Ewell and Nine Elms and Victoria station and depots. He also struck on at least 11 separate train carriages on the Southern network.

Outside the court D Sgt Kerr said: "The tags and acts of vandalism committed by Davies certainly provided no joy for the rail industry or for commuters.

"Graffiti damage costs the industry substantial sums of money to remove, and results in trains being taken out of service and general inconvenience to the traveling public.

"I'd like to thank the member of the public who came forward with information to assist police in tracing Davies and putting an end to his crime spree."

You would have thought he would have grown out of scribbling on walls at his age.
By the looks of the photo, he isn't even very good!

Obviously in some sort of denial as I suspect that with a face like that he'd be lucky to have intimate relations with one person, let alone be involved in an orgy?

Also, 24 years old? I thought that graffiti was something that kiddies did?

He was actually pretty talented. But of course the paper isn't going to put something that looks nice in the article because that doesn't 'paint' him in the light that they want.

Mr Jones - And as for kiddies doing graffiti, you couldn't be further from the truth.

Also, shouldn't custodial sentences be the preserve of people who are actually a threat to society. No wonder we keep reading that jails are at their capacity if we are locking up individuals such as this one. I hate to use the old comparison cliche but people can carry knives and get a much less severe sentence than this.

Sending a grafiti artist to jail to mix with criminals is both a waste of taxpayers money and also a likely conversion to either drugs or crime, if going by statistics is correct.

As he has shown a complete disregard for the law in this instance, it would be logical to assume that when he goes to prison, he will inevitabely start breaking more severe laws.

Great news, well done and many thanks to the Police!

Many thanks to the Judge from us all!

This criminal was jailed and hopefully more of these Graffiti vandals will be infomed on by the public!

Let's give these Graffiti criminals no mercy!

If you know someone who's doing this stuff, let the Police know!!

Looking at the picture he looks as though he has a sub par IQ, so it's not particularly suprising that he couldn't even spell orgy properly, I'm just suprised he managed to get as many letters correct as he did.

Orgie was both a sik graffiti writer and a safe guy. This is a total waste of time sending him to prison. And to every one disrespecting and insulting him have you ever herd the expression dont judge a book by its cover?

This young man should not be in prison he should be out there cleaning off the walls that the graffiti is on. I mean come on some nice church volunteer will end up doing it instead. Talk about a society of rights and wrongs..I had Graffiti on my office wall not so long ago and a young police woman was trying to get it off. You can't teach this character change unless you show him it. Tag him like he tags the walls and get him cleaning as though it was his job...

Surely a more constructive form of punishment would have made much more sense? i.e. Cleaning trains of their graffiti or any part of London of graffiti? Being part of the Council's 'graffiti clearing team'might make the act of graffiti less attractive. One lives in hope.

What an assumption that he will commit further more serious crimes! He has been locked up for acts that have no detrimental effects on anyone, yet you predict that he will turn into a hardened criminal. The only effect I can see of this sentence is a more careful and prepared graffiti artist.

I can bet you that we won't be seeing Banksy doing a stretch now his identity is revealed. Once again it's one rule for one and one rule for the other.

I agree with a lot of the views here - the punishment does not fit the crime. How is this geeky little graffiti 'artist' going to turn out when he comes out of a 9 month stretch in prison with hardened criminals.

The only fitting punishment for graffiti artists is to make them pay for the damage thay have caused to be professionally removed. This would perhaps make them think twice before doing it again. Making them clean it up themselves is not enough of a deterrent.

If he was indeed unwell as you state he should have sought medical attention, it does not excuse his actions even if he was an expert on vaults (although what bearing that has on the subject I don't know).
In response to your query regarding the adage of books, I'm sure that most of us have encountered the expression, have you ever herd (sic) of literacy or a dictionary?

How is little artist going to come out from prison? - with any luck exausted from all the man love, maybe that way he won't do it again.
