Police terror warning
Surrey's high streets and busy shopping centres are at risk of terrorist attack, police say.
Surrey Police have launched a series of workshops for local companies to learn how to plan, prepare, prevent and recover from a possible terrorist attack, saying "while there is no specific terrorist threat to Surrey at the current time, terrorist attacks in the UK are a real and serious danger".
"Our close proximity to London and the national threat means we all need to play our role in keeping the county safe.
"An attack can come at any time at any place without any warning.
"Preferred targets for terrorists are crowded places with little or no protective security measures, which means our high streets and busy shopping centres are at risk, but that risk can be minimised."
Surrey Police Project Argus and National Counter Terrorism Security Office officers will hold a workshop in Spelthorne on April 24 for businesses to help them minimise their risk of attack.
Bob Stephens, one of Surrey Police's counter terrorism security advisers, said: "The UK continues to be a target for terrorists. The question is not if but where and when, and the managers of businesses in crowded places like our high streets must be prepared. These workshops will help them to do this.
"Project Argus is an unique opportunity to judge how well prepared is your business, increase your knowledge of terrorist issues, compare notes with other local businesses, or just a chance for you and selected staff to experience a well-run security exercise.
"Everyone in Surrey can help us maintain the freedoms which we value by being alert. Recognise suspicious behaviour and if anything appears unusual, report it."
Suspicious activity can be reported confidentially to the Anti-Terrorist Hotline on 0800 789 321 or dial 999 if you have serious concerns about something currently taking place.
To reserve a place at the workshop at Spelthorne Leisure Centre, Staines, on April 24 phone 01784 446300.

1. Is there no limit to the things that the Surrey Police Force find to do other than the 'beat patrols' that the public wish to see them performing ?.
2.Why does the Anti-Terrorist Hotline have such an unmemorable number ?.
3.I bet there is hardly a single member of the general public who could write that number down without another look above.

Dear G.Virr,
Point 3. You would have lost your bet as that number is well known to me and remembered without problem. Never assume that other members of the public do not know something as there is always someone who does!
