England football captain caught in disabled parking spot

Chelsea football captain John Terry was caught illegally parking in a disabled bay on Friday afternoon.
The £100,000-a-week Chelsea defender, who also captains the England team, slipped into the parking space in Esher High Street just after 12.30pm before enjoying a leisurely family lunch in nearby Pizza Express - shocking onlookers.
He has been strongly criticised for his actions - for which he received a £60 fine - as the restaurant is only yards from the 50p-an-hour Civic Centre car park.
"It is pretty disgraceful and I am very annoyed by it," said Councillor Jimmy Cartwright, who is chairman of Elmbridge Access Group, which aims to improve disabled facilities in the borough.
"This man is supposed to be a role model but by doing this he is showing a blatant disregard for the law and for the needs of disabled people in the borough."

"This wasn't just stopping for two minutes. He was parked there for a long time and that is a long time depriving someone else who could have needed it a lot more, its terrible behaviour."

Elmbridge Access Group treasurer Colin Wheatley, who suffers from Motor Neurone Disease and is disabled, said he would not single Terry out for particular criticism because in his opinion everyone flouting the law in this way should be severely punished.
A spokesman for Terry said the England captain was sorry and it would not happen again. He also apologised for any inconvenience caused to anyone needing the parking space.

People park in disabled bays illegally all the time, how come they don't make the news? Wether a famous person does it or not it still isn't going to stop people from doing it so waste news space. There must be something more exciting going on that can be reported.

Like it or not, this story involves someone involved in a high-profile position - a "celebrity" if you like.
People like to hear about them and what's happening in their lives - there are enough god-awful glossy magazines to prove it - so it is NEWS.

john terry is a great footballer and seems like a decent sort but, like it or not, this is news. if only because of the way footballers seem to think they are above the law. £60 means nothing to him and that's why he did it. he deserves to be exposed for it...

Very thoughtless. Very selfish. Why would any self-respecting person want to deprive a disadvantaged citizen from using a facility that was created for their use? Shameful.

like the lad doesnt do enough for the borough anyway.
he's probably given more to charity than the whole borough put together.

This is shameful. It is easier and more convenient for him to pay £60 than to park properly. He should have had his car scrapped and both ankles broken, to help him understand disability. He wouldn't do it again.

Also what was the hours of operation of the bay as you can park in them when they are restricted to certain hours!!

Well considering he had a broken foot for 2 months i think he understands the meaning of disability.

Big deal - someone did it in Stoneleigh Broadway tonight - oh it wasn't a celeb.
Complete no news story - make a story out of nothing - yet no mentions when maybe he does something for charity - which is often and alot. As for the Scouser commenting on this - do you actually know where Esher is ?

It's a disgrace that an England captain and a role model has done this.
What kind of example is he setting for young people?
The fact that he gives money to charity does not condone this kind of behaviour.

Personally I don't see the big deal. We all use the disabled toilet, we all illegally park from time to time, it's just because of who he is that it's a big deal. Stop sipping the haterade folks, he's human.

The reason people of note are reported widely for abusing such things as disabled parking is because they are in the public eye and should know better and also set an example to others. The reason people like you are not reported widely is because no one has ever heard of you!!
