London Mayoral candidate Boris Johnson launched his transport manifesto today.
The Conservative MP said he wanted to cut the amount of time Londoners spent trapped in their cars and create a safer transport system which benefits all of London.
Halt Tube ticket office closures
He also wants teens that lose their free bus travel privilege by committing antisocial behaviour to earn it back through community service.
| “The current mayor is clearly a Zone 1 man who cares little for those living in London’s outer boroughs that get a raw deal. My transport manifesto takes that into account – and will appeal to the whole of London." | | Boris Johnson |
|
Mr Johnson said: "The current mayor is clearly a Zone 1 man who cares little for those living in London's outer boroughs that get a raw deal. My transport manifesto takes that into account - and will appeal to the whole of London.
"We have had to sit and watch as fresh thinking and vital reports have been suppressed - all while this Labour mayor has pursued far-flung projects which are completely out of touch with Londoners' concerns."

Mr Boris launches campaign on a routemaster... nice bus, pity it cant be used by the old, infirm, wheelchair users, mums with buggies etc.
Oh yes, thats why Ken has has invested heavily in new modern buses that everyone can use and brought the fare down to 80p.
As a car driver I love having a better bus service since it keeps loads of people off the road.
Role on 24/7 freedom pass too. Only safe with Ken Livingstone

Load of nonsense. Make mothers fold pushchairs and buggies and take away free fares for children.
Let's have some real discipline on public transport where passengers actually care for their fellows rather than scything the old and infirm out the way with a benefit paid for baby buggy.
Remove free fares.

the bus fare is £2. its 80p with an oyster card which you are forced to buy.
if you happen to run out of credit or forget your card. you get cained for your troubles.
if ken is so nice why do we even need the card, just make the transport cheaper?
i'll tell you why. its a money scam. we pay our money for credit. which seems like a good deal. when infact its just the same price it was before labour took over. they store the money in a bank and take the intrest.
by having a card your also one step closer to a big brother state. your whereabouts is being watched everytime you swip that card.
open your eyes people.

Public Transport has been revolutionised by the Mayor with many more buses across the capital.
The Oyster card is a way of reducing the cash handling and increasing the speed of boarding buses. Only a fool would not buy an Oyster!
The old, young and infirm get free travel, so its only those in between that have to get an Oyster.
As for bad behaviour on buses, it has to be tackled, but it is through CCTV and such like. More can always be done though.

Firstly, Boris has said he wants a '21st century routemaster' which will be accessible by wheelchair users and mums with pushchairs. In addition he's also said he wants to bring back conductors so this will make travelling on the bus more enjoyable.
The fare is actually now 90p, and on your 'new modern buses' 2 out of every 3 passengers doesn't swipe in - costing the rest of us even more.
Finally, Boris has repeatedly promised to protect the 24/7 freedom pass - so your final comment is just a lie.
I've never voted Conservative in my life, but I can't bare Livingstone any more. He is arrogant and very wasteful. I really do think we need a change

what a stupid thing to say - 'cctv will tackle it' - all it might do is tell you it has happened after the event - no punishment if they ever catch any of them as well and the etched windows are etched for ever. The buses need a conductor moving about frequently on them. Most buses outside the rush hour are empty anyway and all the bendy ones do is clog up the roads and give free travel to those who want to cheat the system which is very many(don't believe me - take a ride down Commercial Street/Whitechapel road on one tomorrow evening between 5 and 6 and see for yourself

With regards to people in wheelchairs and mums with pushchairs - Reading's Routemasters were replaced by "modern" buses in 2000 supposedly to benefit wheelchair & pushchair users. 8 years on I've still to see a wheelchair or pushchair on a Reading bus (and I've never seen any on modern London buses either). Incidentally, when Reading's RM's were replaced, Ken refurbished them and brought them back to London at a cost of approx 30K each (cost of a new bus is around 300K).

I'm only interested in one thing in May and that's getting shot of Livingstone. What a pity we've got to wait until June 2010 to do the same with' bottler' Brown.

Yes stop children getting free bus passes, make their parents pay
why should us car users subsidise the no go buses
Cut fuel tax
If you cannot afford a car then dont expect my sympathy
Back Cars scarp the congestion charge, scrap free bus passes
Back Boris

Why doesnt Boris answer the question - Will he alter the conditions of the over 60s freedom pass? - unfortunately I believe hidden in his "policies" is a cut! being a car driver as well as a pass holder I know which i would travel by in traffic jammed areas - the pass wins hands down! Whilst I loathe Ken and his hangers on I have not been impressed by the other candidates "global transport policies" for London. scrapping bendy buses love or hate them, the congestion charge which does not seem to address congestion in the centre of london (still congested in trafalgar sqare and environs)another income for Ken and cronies - no-one has ever addressed and won the game on roadworks or bus lanes. The jury is still out for my vote.[bold]bold[/bold]

What say does the Mayor have over the Freedom Pass? It says that it is financed by "your local council" which, in my case, happens to be Tory-controlled Croydon. A scare story?

Oyster is the only good thing that Ken has done, although they should be free and non users should not be charged any more.
Traffic levels in London are now the same as before the Zone, and since the western extension Westminster has got even worse.
Anyone that thinks the £25 4x4 charge is a good thing is deluded, each 4x4 will just be replaced by a couple of smaller cars that will be free... a waste of time and just pure revenue generation.
The time has come to move on, lets face it Boris can't do any worse.
And I agree with above, name one thing Ken has done that is not in Central London, to do with the olympics / east end, or crossrail.
