Does your dog have the ‘X Factor’? The Epsom Playhouse is looking for two well-trained small breed dogs with an eye for the limelight to star as Toto in this year’s family pantomime The Wizard of Oz this Christmas.

In the film version Toto was a terrier, but the theatre welcomes other dog breeds too. During the audition the candidates will be asked to “perform” with Samantha Giffard, the professional actress who is playing Dorothy in the production. The audition will include music and distractions to simulate the live theatre environment. No previous acting experience is required but a well-trained dog with a perky disposition is likely to secure the part. No prima donna canines please.

The successful dogs will share the role between them at performances of the pantomime which opens on Friday 13 December and runs until Sunday 4 January. Owners will be expected to attend the dress rehearsal but during the run of the show they will be able to leave the dog at the theatre with the designated ‘dog handler’ who will look after the animals.

Dog auditions will be held on Sunday 19 October at 10am at the Epsom Playhouse. The winning dogs will each be awarded a small appearance fee and a family ticket to the show for their owners.

Pre-registration is required by Wednesday 15 October by sending contact details of dog and owner, along with a photo of the dog to bev.berridge@btinternet.com. Upon receipt participants will be emailed confirmation of specific audition details. Please note no walk-ups will be permitted on the day of the audition.

Tickets for The Wizard of Oz are on sale now starting from £12 and can be booked at: www.epsomplayhouse.co.uk or by ringing the Box Office on 01372 742555/742227.
