Rehearsing lines out loud while jogging has been the perfect preparation for Dannielle Malone’s latest role where she discovers sex and bondage while at the job centre, writes Robert Fisk.

The Hollyoaks star is getting ready for her stint in the 37-venue theatre tour of 51 Shades of Maggie Muff, the raunchy spoof of the best-selling novel Fifty Shades of Grey.

Leesa Harker’s 51 Shades of Maggie follows the adventures of a bored, unemployed council estate girl whose excitement in life is limited to shoplifting excursions in B&Q.

However, on a visit to the Job Centre, Maggie meets the man of her dreams, and she enters into his world of sex and bondage.

During the show, Malone will be alone on stage for two hours, enthralling an audience while playing several characters, and describing Maggie’s sex life in graphic detail. Malone read the original books to be able to throw herself into her character.

“And you need to be able to get into character physically,” says the 32-year-old.

“There’s a lot of running around and simulated sex on stage, so I’ve been rehearsing my lines out loud while out jogging, with my iPhone in my ear.”

The show’s raunchy content means it is unsuitable for anyone under the age of 16.

But Malone says it does not go too far.

She says: “Maggie can be crude, but she’s also quite naive which makes her loveable. And what I also like about her is she’s honest.

"She’s saying ‘This is me. I’ll do what I want and I won’t apologise for it.

"You can’t accuse Maggie of not saying what’s on her mind.

“And nor is she a victim.

“She may go along with the bondage and all of that but she’s making her own decisions in life.”

The actress adds: “What you have to remember is that audiences, largely made up of women, just want a good night out. When I read the script I just thought it hilarious.”
