"A radical mash-up of two iconic pieces of work" will be coming to Epsom Playhouse.

Concert Theatre will be bringing The Rite of Spring/Romeo and Juliet to the stage.

Performed live by acclaimed Royal Academy concert pianists, Stravinsky's The Rite of Spring and Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet will be brought to life as a part concert recital, part dramatic performance.

The playhouse says: "A radical mash-up of the two iconic pieces of work, the production uses commedia half masks and piano played by four hands to create a music-oriented physical theatre piece that re-tells Shakespeare's romantic tragedy within a re-interpretation of Stravinsky's ballet and orchestral concert work.

"The Rite of Spring/Romeo and Juliet is a visceral marriage of two tales of slaughtered innocence.

"The violent dissonance in Stravinsky's depiction of a young virgin chosen for the dance of death mirrors the hatred between Shakespeare's Montagues and Capulets, whose children are fated to die in the ancient blood feud of their families.

"The stories interweave through passion, vitality, rage and despair to the dizzying climax of sacrifice."
