Three brothers who were given their first instruments by their grandfather are building up fans with their alternative folk sound – with metal and choral influences.

Dan, Luke and Tom Barron were members of several school choirs while studying at John Fisher School in Purley.

The trio then spent a couple of years on the London circuit as part of a metal group before having a rethink and Heavy on the Strawberries (HOTS) was born.

Combining vocals, acoustic guitar, mandolin and a Peruvian percussion instrument called a cajon the stripped back sound is proving very popular.

Since their formation in April 2012, Heavy on the Strawberries has recorded an album which was mastered at Abbey Road Studios and have released a single titled On the Dole.

HOTS describes their sound as alternative folk with a definite crossover with popular music.

As well as the single the debut album features several ballads with influences including said its influences include indie bands such as Fleet Foxes, Bon Iver and Matthew and the Atlas.

Luke writes the songs, with Dan co-writing and adding harmonies and Tom writing the drum accompaniment that drives the songs.

The brothers, from Caterham, are aged between 19 and 23 and are keeping the band fun but professional as well as juggling full time jobs.
