Kingston Spotlight kicked off last week with dozens of shoppers voting for their favourite acts in the lead up to Christmas.

The public chose duo Josh Burrows and Martha Christoforou, a Surbiton based acoustic band, as winners of the first round of town centre ‘busking.’

The pair entertained crowds with popular songs including Kate Nash’s Foundations which got the loudest applause over the weekend.

Mr Burrows said: "This is brilliant. We were not expecting to win. We were really nervous about it but there were lots of people out watching."

He said he had expected fellow performer Sophie Plummer to take the prize following her success with Surrey's Got Talent but felt happy that the band had pipped her to it.

Organisers Kingstonfirst will release biographies and videos ahead of the street shows.

Shoppers and residents are urged to get behind their favourite acts by voting for them to become the Brightest Spotlight of the Week.

To support your favourite act, text 60777 at your standard network charge with the code of the act you like the most from Wednesday until midnight on Monday when voting ends.

Alternatively email your votes to the Surrey Comet at newsdesk@surreycomet.co.uk.

Winners will be announced in the Surrey Comet and Kingston Guardian next week.
