Since the re-launch of the MINI brand in 2001, there have been a multitude of model spin-offs from the standard 3-door hatch – including the Clubman Countryman and Paceman – but no actual 5 door MINI hatchback… that is until now.

Like all MINI models, the new MINI 5-door Hatch has an unmistakable appearance. The body, windows and roof are visually separated from one another. The window line tapers off to the rear, contributing to a dynamic wedge shape when viewed in profile.

From the front and rear it’s hard to discern from the 3-door, but in profile its stretched 5-door body is readily apparent. The wide track and short overhangs emphasise the striking design language of the vehicle's body. Traditional design features include the hexagonal contour of the radiator grille, the side indicator surrounds, circular headlights and upright rear light clusters.

Two solid and nine metallic exterior colours are available for the new MINI 5-door Hatch, including the return of the popular ‘Electric Blue’. In all models, the roof and exterior mirror caps can be finished in a contrasting colour, white or black, as a no-cost option.

On the road, the 5-door possesses the same familiar go-kart handling and sharp driving dynamics that the 3-door hatch is renowned for. Steering and gearbox have a satisfying feel, which combine with the agile chassis to engage the driver.

This 192 hp Cooper S model is the quickest model in the range (0-62mph in 6.9 seconds and 144mph top speed). The 2.0 litre turbocharged petrol engine gives it true hot-hatch performance, but despite this it’s respectably economical, with an official 49.6mpg and 136g/km of CO2.

There are also three other engines utilising MINI TwinPower Turbo Technology. A 3-cylinder petrol engine with a peak output of 136 hp powers the MINI Cooper 5-door Hatch, while the new MINI Cooper D 5-door Hatch is powered by a 116 hp 3-cylinder diesel engine.

The MINI Cooper SD 5-door Hatch also introduces a new 2.0-litre 4-cylinder diesel power unit that has an output of 170 hp. This new engine aims to balance performance with frugality.

A comfortable, upright driving position remains as before, but body changes bring about greater rear head and legroom, along with a bigger boot. However, entry into the rear cabin is a bit of a squeeze, as the doors are rather narrow. Still, once inside occupants will appreciate the extra accommodation – there’s now enough space for even taller passengers. Boot space is bigger too, although at 278 litres is still less than the Ford Fiesta’s.

The standard specification on the new MINI includes a six-speed manual transmission, front and rear electric windows, electrically adjustable exterior mirrors, air-conditioning, door sill cover strips with a model-specific inscription, front fog lamps, onboard computer, MINI Radio including aux-in, USB interface and Bluetooth, DAB Digital Radio and front ISOFIX with passenger airbag deactivation.

True to the brand, there are numerous option packs available, ranging from leather upholstery, head-up display, to a MINI navigation system. These all add appeal, but can quickly escalate the price.

Verdict:

MINI’s 5 door hatch builds on the strengths of the established 3-door model, with greater versatility and usability at a reasonable premium.
