I love Mexican food, so I didn’t take much convincing when asked to try Wimbledon’s newest burrito bar.

Chipotle opened on The Broadway in Wimbledon in February and is the sixth in to open in the UK as part of a chain originally founded in America in 1993.

I wasn’t sure what to expect when I arrived on a weekday evening but was instantly approving of its clean, smart interior.

Deceptively large, the restaurant runs to the back with dozens of booths available – a step up from the simple ‘perch and go’ formula in other fast food restaurants, allowing you to take a bit more time over your meal.

The lighting and atmosphere has a smart casual feel to it and although it is a ‘fast food’ restaurant it doesn’t really feel like it.

The real surprise was the outside space at the back of the restaurant where patio doors lead out to yet more tables and an attractively designed courtyard eating area – sure to be a winner when the sun finally arrives.

In terms of food the idea is simple - choose from a burrito, taco, burrito bowl (a burrito without the tortilla) or salad, then select your meat, fillings and sauces to suit your tastes.

I went for a burrito filled with beef barbacoa (£6.95) - spicy, shredded beef braised for hours in the restaurants trademark marinade of chipotle pepper adobo, cumin, cloves, garlic and oregano.

To this I added pinto beans, sour cream, a mild salsa, lettuce and rice all wrapped up in a soft tortilla.

I also sampled a bag of tortilla chips with guacamole on the side (£2.30), which I’m told are made fresh on site daily seasoned with salt and a twist of lemon.

The burrito itself was delicious - hot, fresh and large enough to satisfy the hungriest of diners.

The staff were pleasant, friendly and attentive while the manager’s obvious enthusiasm for the restaurant was both refreshing and reassuring.

She was keen to highlight the fresh ingredients that go into every meal as well the individual spices which make up their trademark Chipotle sauce made from scratch on site.

Based on my visit I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend Chipotle to anyone looking for a tasty, filling and fresh meal in a casual yet stylish setting.

Chipotle won’t suit those looking for a three-course dinner and a vast menu – but if good quality Mexican food is what you are after, then give this place a go.
