Croissants, cream cakes, fancy breads – finding a good bakery/cafe can feel like winning the lottery. That’s why we’ve gone on the hunt for some of south London’s best.

We’ve scoured the popular review site TripAdvisor to compile this list of some of the area’s finest purveyors of baked goods. To counter a few (good or bad) words making a significant difference, we’ve only included places with more than 20 reviews.

Of course, TripAdvisor reviews can only tell you so much. We want to know your favourite bakeries. Tell us in the comments, tweet @JimNewsShopper or join the debate on our facebook page, facebook.com/SLdnVibe

Surrey Comet: Brixton bakery to appear on ITV1 series Britain's Best Bakery

Ms Cupcake

Coldharbour Lane, Brixton

Not only does Ms Cupcake serve up amazing cakes, it serves up amazing cakes for people who can’t normally eat cake. All of their products are vegan and lots of them are wheat and gluten free. It’s no wonder reviewers love them.

Cakeboy

Juniper Drive, Battersea Reach

French celebrity chef and master patissier Eric Lanlard’s fancy ‘cake boutique’ opened by the Thames in 2005 and Cake Boy’s consistently great reviews have won it a TripAdvisor Certificate of Excellence. Treat yourself to cakes and tarts or Vienoiserie including pain aux chocolate and croissants.

Carmella Patisserie

Ewell Road, Surbiton

This Persian patisserie in Surbiton is, according to reviewers, a real gem. One customer, NamMan wrote: The best Turkish Delight ever...the cakes aren't half bad either. Great to have this on my doorstep, although maybe not for the waistline.”

Surrey Comet: WIN! An exclusive cake from Patisserie Valerie worth £30

Patisserie Valerie

In Sutton, Bromley, Twickenham and Kingston

Such is the quality of the fare at Patisserie Valerie, four of its outlets got very high ratings on TripAdvisor. The Belgian-inspired cake shops carefully tread the line between boutique extravagance and high street accessibility with delicate little cakes that are certainly a treat but don’t necessarily break the bank.

CakeWalk Patisserie and coffee house

Richmond Road, Kingston

As the name suggest, you’ll get an ace slice of cake in CakeWalk but it seems you’ll also be able to grab a great pastries and baguettes as well. Pastry chef Elif worked at the Four Seasons Hotel for 18 years.

Richmond Hill Bakery

Friars Stile Road, Richmond

This artisan bakery doesn’t just make tasty cakes but also pastries and breads daily. User Juliet83 said: “Helpful service, popular with locals and amazing home baking. Try the breakfast brioches and the scones, especially. Really excellent local coffee shop - seek it out!”

Surrey Comet:

The Original Maids of Honour

Kew Road, Kew

If there’s one thing that’ll go down well after a walk around the gardens, it’s a tea and cake. And you could do much worse this historic bakery and tea room. As a recent reviewer put it: “The decor is cute and the High Tea is quite good. The desserts live up to the highest of expectations and the staff is extremely friendly, going out of their way to make you comfortable and happy.” What more could you ask for?

Hummingbird Bakery

The Quadrant. Richmond

It’s pink and lovely and another great choice for cakes. If customers have a gripe, it’s about the price, but more often than not they’re cooing about the sweet treats.

Lulu’z

London Road, Twickenham

Lulu’z is both a great coffee shop serving up fresh dishes and a bakery with in-house staff making breads, cakes and other baked goods every day and a range of gluten free cakes. Reviewer M M wrote: “Very pleasant atmosphere and good quality foods, albeit a tiny bit on the pricey side. Worth it as the cakes and bakes are really delicious..”

Your Bakery

High Street, Whitton

Another Certificate of Excellence winner. Reviewer Kayleigh895 said: “Really very good bakery with a massive selection of cakes, pastries, cheesecakes, savoury bakes and breads. Everything is made to a high quality and they even have gift items you can purchase in the shop.”

Herbert’s

Commonside, Keston

This highly-regarded cafe in Keston run by chef patron Angela Herbert-Bell prides itself on making everything in house, whether that’s its lunches, ice cream or its excellent baked goods.
