Thirteen voracious gluttons battled against each other and the clock to munch their way through lunch in the fastest time possible on Friday.

Mexway's Man vs Burrito challenge saw Richard Vick, from Croydon, crowned speed-eating champion - but not without controversy.

Jordan Johnson, of Coulsdon, tied in first place after devouring a spicy chicken and rice wrap in just two minutes.

But Mr Vick claimed victory in a tie-breaker which saw him shovel away 15 tortilla chips in just 60 seconds.

Croydon Guardian reporter Chris Baynes fared less well, finally finishing his sizeable burrito several minutes later - having enjoyed a large breakfast just few hours earlier.

Felix Billson, 23, of Wandsworth, suffered no such problems. He refrained from eating for 36 hours to prepare for the challenge, while guzzling water to widen his belly.

He said: "I took my strategy from Man vs Food. Unfortunately I ate a Jaffa Cake this morning, which is maybe why I didn't win."

The restaurant held the competition to celebrate its first birthday.
