For many Marvel fans, this has been the long awaited movie adaptation of the cult comic-book Deadpool.

Surrey Comet:

The idea for the film was originally developed over 11-years ago back in 2004. If it wasn’t for the fact that in 2014 someone leaked a crude visual effects test footage on line, with Reynolds in the role (created in 2012) the film would never have been picked up. Due to popular demand the studio made an announcement in September 2014 that the release date would be February 2016 and the rest is history!

The plot involves a former US Special Forces Operative Wade Wilson (Ryan Reynolds) now working as a mercenary, who undergoes an experiment that changes his DNA and leaves him disfigured but at the same time gives him the gift of accelerated healing powers.

Surrey Comet:

Wilson is now after revenge on the mutant Ajax / Francis (British actor Ed Skrein) which pretty much covers the plot synopsis. However, the first thing Wade needs for his new found superpowers is a name ‘Deadpool’ and a superhero suit. So we have a spoof on the Spiderman type search for that ultimate spandex outfit.

It is also pointed out by Wade, breaking the fourth wall once again, that the film is also a love story visualised via a montage of rough consensual love-making with his girlfriend Vanessa (Morena Baccarin).

Surrey Comet:

You can tell this is a ‘labour of love’ for Reynolds who really makes his mark on the Deadpool character and no doubt secured a string of sequels and guest appearances. This is a Marvel film like nothing you will have seen before and hats-off to Marvel for having the guts to go all out with sticking closely to the comic-books.

Surrey Comet:

On the one hand it is fair to say that this movie is aimed at a certain sector of thee Marvel geekdom (I mean that in a sincere way). But it will also appeal to those of us who like to be entertained, amused and wowed! And understand the difference between a fictional story with brutal violence and the real world.

Although there are gratuitous violent scenes (which we are aware of from the hilarious opening credits) it is only a movie and has to be taking in the manner of a comic-book universe.

Surrey Comet:

To off-set the violence there are plenty of amusing moments such as Deadpool arriving at the scene of his clash with the bad guys on the freeway by means of taking a yellow taxi cab rather than some modified superhero automobile. Also Deadpool’s constant motor-mouthing could always talk them to death!

There are some nice supporting characters throughout the film. We have the two X-Men (actually one is an X-Woman) Colossus (Stefan Kapicic) a metallic X-Man with a German accent and explosive fire creating Negasonic (Brianna Hildebrand) a young teenage girl with cropped hair being ribbed by Deadpool with Sinead O’Connor gags. The two X-Men are constantly trying to enrol Deadpool into the X-Men team.

Surrey Comet:

Morena Baccarin (Serenity 2005, Homeland 2011) who plays Wade’s / Deadpool’s girl, is great and is more than a match for Wade and an ideal partner.

T.J. Miller (Cloverfield 2008, Big Hero 6 2014) is a good foil as Wade’s friend Weasel and has been given some real funny lines. Looking like a slightly toned down Zach Galifianakis.

Surrey Comet:

Not all of the jokes hit their mark but the pace of the film doesn’t really give you a chance to dwell on any thoughts before you are on to the next wise crack.

I thoroughly enjoyed this film and could quite easily give it a second viewing straight away.

Regular Marvel moviegoers will know to stay seated through the ending credits and I promise you won’t be disappointed.
