Folk group The Unthanks will be performing at the Harlequin Theatre on April 20.
Fronted by sisters Rachel and Becky Unthank, the singers prefer to see folk music as an ongoing written history rather than a style of music.
Shortlisted for the 2011 Mercury Music Prize, The Unthanks are influenced as much by the minimalist eccentricity of Steve Reich, Antony and The Johnsons, Robert Wyatt and Miles Davis as they are by their Geordie native North East England.
Following the release of their 2011 album, Last, this tour will encompass many of the songs from the album as well as previous releases. The Unthanks prove that staunch traditionalism and sonic adventure need not be opposites.
The group will be supported by Newcastle duo Jonny Kearney and Lucy Farrell at the performance.
