Surrey’s stand in for Vincent Van Gogh will exhibit his work in Walton.
John A Walker, a painter and retired art historian, bases his work on the Dutch post-impressionist, but denies his work is a copy or a forgery.
Walker says: “It is a creative response or homage to a superb pen and ink drawing of a landscape by Vincent.
“Rather than use one of my own drawings as a starting point, I employed one of Vincent’s that he never turned into a painting. I have had to invent or imagine the colouration.”
Walker draws inspiration from the use Francis Bacon made of Van Gogh’s self portrait on the road to Tarascon and has published a detail analysis of the drawing.
The drawings show many views, including an ancient abbey and a plain near Arles in Provence.
Since this painting, Walker has completed a further five based on Van Gogh’s works, which will all be shown alongside reproductions of the historic originals.
