The spirit of a great British holiday camp will be captured in a free exhibition at Kingston Museum this summer.

Morning Camper! The British holiday camp will take visitors through the rich history of Butlins from its humble origins in 1936 to its present day mini-golfing, swimming and disco nights.

Butlins was founded by entrepreneur Billy Butlin prior to the start of the Second World War to help British families including those from Kingston to go on affordable holidays.

Today there are more than a dozen such Butlins holiday camps for families to enjoy including in Bognor and Cornwall.

Through the exhibition, Kingston resident Nancy Vlasto, best known for fundraising in her scooter with Blossom the horse, will be popping in and giving talks about her early family experience at Butlins taken from her autobiography, What’s Next.

Emma Rummins, curator at Kingston Museum, said: “With the heat, the summer we thought it would be nice to have the exhibition. It’s a fun thing – old photos, objects, children’s activities, information.

“It is great for all the family and people can reminisce about their holidays.”

Morning Camper! The British holiday camp, Kingston Museum, Wheatfield Way, Kingston until September 14 exhibition can be seen during normal opening hours.
