“Recently there’s been an element of contentiousness around my work”.

As starts to stand-up shows go, this is a pretty passive-aggressive one from Reginald D Hunter at Fairfield Halls, Croydon; both defending his work and immediately referencing his infamous gig at the PFA awards in April.

Hunter, drawn to the nation’s attention after frequent appearances on shows such as Have I Got News For You, made national headlines after he was booked to appear at the annual professional footballers’ shindig, resulting in the curious 21st century spectacle of a black man from Atlanta, Georgia, being criticised for his use of the n-word.

“The footballers weren’t upset, they were confused,” says Hunter. “They just weren’t used to hearing that language off the pitch.”

It makes for a strong start, and, while the laughs per minute ratio drops as Hunter explores other themes around gender politics and Oscar Pistorius, it remains a solid show throughout from an intelligent, performer with a lot to say.

Reginald D Hunter appeared at Fairfield Halls on Saturday October 26. He is currently touring his show In the Midst of Crackers until November 30. For more dates, visit reginalddhunter.com.
