10:13am Friday 3rd November 2006 in Comedy By Nancy Groves
Battersea and Balham are well-served for stand-up, but nearby Clapham is a relatively comedy-free zone.
Certainly, anyone walking down the high street on a Friday night has little to laugh about when trying to negotiate the queue outside Infernos.
Three cheers then for the start of a new monthly night at the Bread and Roses pub on Clapham Manor Street.
Killjoy Comedy Club is the brainchild of former stand-up Lara Silverstone, 32, and her DJ boyfriend Matthew Cox, 31, who wanted to field something a little different from your average night out at Jongleurs.
The first show this Saturday will feature Ben Norris, Amadeus and Hal Cruttenden, with resident compere, DJ Big Al. Comedy starts at 8pm and will be followed by an after party until midnight with rare groove, funk, soul and upbeat house beats.
"Not enough comedy nights do that," says Lara. "People have a great night enjoying the stand-up but then they have to go home. This way the party goes on that bit longer."
Killjoy Comedy Club, The Bread and Roses, 68 Clapham Manor Street, Clapham, Saturday, November 4, 8pm, £10/£6 NUS. Call 020 7498 1779.
