Ian Broudie excited ahead of Croydon Summer Festival

Even the Croydon Summer Festival has not escaped the after-effects of England's dismal World Cup campaign.

The two-day event this weekend is headlined by The Lightning Seeds on Saturday and they do, of course, have a very famous football song in their back catalogue.

But so lacklustre and devoid of passion were Fabio Cappelo's men in South Africa that Three Lions is now highly unlikely to make an appearance.

"I have been playing it throughout the summer but having watched England I think it would be stupid playing it this weekend," says Ian Broudie, founder and singer of the band who topped the charts in the mid-90s.

"When you have gone to a World Cup and played crap it seems totally impractical.

"People do love the song but right now I don't feel like playing it and I am not sure people will want to hear it.

"It's a bit like playing a Christmas song when it's not Christmas.

"There will be some Lightning Seeds hits and a couple of things off my last album - mainly a lot of things people will know."

Broudie is back touring again having released the first Lightning Seeds album in a decade, Four Winds, last year, but he has no plans to follow it up at present.

"I felt Four Winds was a solo album but I was kind of pushed into making it a Lightning Seeds one," says the 51 year-old.

"Lightning Seeds for me is historically very upbeat so in retrospect I wish that it had been my second album.

"For the minute I just fancy playing live for a bit, getting out in the world and seeing how I feel about making more Lightning Seeds records.

"I have just decided to improve my writing and see if I write a Lightning Seeds album or not.

"Every now and then you come to a point when you feel you need to just decide what you are going to do for the next few years and I feel like that at the minute."

Apart from Broudie the Lightning Seeds line-up has changed many times and on Saturday he will be joined on stage by his son Riley who is now 19 and will even play on the song Life Of Riley, which Broudie wrote about his birth.

"He's a guitarist and it is a real thrill for the two of us to play together," says Broudie.

"We have been playing together since he was five."

Croydon Summer Festival, Lloyd Park, July 31 and August 1, 1pm onwards, free. Visit croydonsummerfestival.org for a full line-up.
