New writing is being celebrated at the cornerHOUSE next week as the annual oneACTS season gets underway. The Tolworth arts centre was inundated with entries for this year’s festival and nine short plays have made the cut. They will be performed on alternate nights from November 9 to 14 and here some of the playwrights playwrights introduce themselves and their plays...
Tim Harrison – Sudokuholics Anonymous I have had four or five of my plays performed at the cornerHOUSE, including Quiz, a short thriller which was staged in the arts centre’s first oneacts season in 2004.
I got the idea as I travelled past my tube stop after I had become engrossed in a newspaper puzzle.
Drug, alcohol and gambling addicts have their own self-help groups, I reasoned, so why not one for people helplessly hooked on sudoku?
I wrote it as a one-character play, to really focus the tension on the sudokuholic and I am delighted that it is the first single-person drama ever included in a oneACTS season.
Tanya Burley - Mr Sandman Mr Sandman is a tale of two siblings with different and extreme views on weddings. It is an idea that has been in my head since shopping for my wedding dress.
I would get distracted by listening to other women as they tried on dresses or chatted to shop assistants. It occurred to me that some had pre-planned the event many years before the existence of a groom.
Hence the character of Millie in Mr Sandman: “Getting married. It is the whole point. It is why I keep dating men and why I keep... trying.”
Andy Moseley - Are You Lonesome Tonight? The inspiration for the play came after I visited Graceland three years ago.
That made me realise how much artists such as Elvis and the Beatles have influenced people’s lives.
It was more than just following a pop star for a few years, they had met people and formed relationships that would not have happened if it hadn’t been for the music. I wanted to write a play about two such people and how they were affected.
Whats on and when... Monday, Wednesday, Friday Touch by Colin Pink, I Forget by Andy Garbett, Scatterjoy by Rachel Trippitt, Good to Text by Rufus Cooper, Sudokuholics Anonymous by Tim Harrison.
Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday Switch by Chis Masters, Two’s Company by Sue Tong, Mr Sandman by Tanya Burley, Are You Lonesome Tonight by Andy Moseley.
