Epsom band The Broadcasts launch single with free download track

The Broadcasts may have been going for little over a year but they are a band with huge ambitions.

This month they are digitally launching their debut single Shortcuts, and guitarist Justin Giarraputo, 25, is hoping it will be the start of something big for the group.

“We just want to get our music out there so as many people as possible can listen to it,” he says.

“We believe in what we are doing and the songs we’ve got.

"Digitial downloads are on the up and the fact that someone in China can access our song is fantastic.”

The Broadcasts were formed in January 2008 by Giarraputo and his brother, Jamie.

The pair, born and bred in Epsom, roped in drummer James Taylor, from Leatherhead, and Kingston-based bassist Rocky Wadhawan to form the band that has been built on a shared love of both classic and modern rock music, with some, perhaps unexpected, dance influences thrown in for good measure.

“When I was growing up I was into Nirvana and grunge,” Justin explains.

“Jamie used to nick my CDs and they would always go missing.

“He was really into hip-hop and dance music and he has taken it into the way we write our songs with dancey rhythms, rather than standard rock beats, aimed at getting people moving.”

Upon forming, the Broadcasts quickly wrote a batch of songs and booked a hectic schedule of gigs – a move that quickly paid off when they caught the eye of producer and engineer Matt Howe who has previously worked with one of the bands heroes, Sir Paul McCartney.

Howe took the lads into studio and Shortcuts and Tightropes are two of the results of these sessions.

“He came down to check out one of our gigs and really liked it,” says Giarraputo.

“We went to record with him which was good fun. He such a nice guy – when you are in the studio for a week and spend 10 hours a day with someone you really get to know them.”

Giarraputo is pleased that the music scene in Epsom is starting to improve, and he adds that when he was growing up heading up to London was the only option for hearing live music.

“We would go to different venues, including the Astoria and the Electric Ballroom, and watch bands like Rage Against the Machine and Pearl Jam.

“Now in Epsom there are places appearing which is brilliant – Native Tonuge is meant to be a popular venue, so we are hoping to do a show there soon.

“We also rehearse in Crown Lane Studios in Morden and get help from Realistic Rock.

“Things are changing slowly but London will always be the Mecca.”
