A family meal at a New Malden restaurant took an unexpected turn when a total stranger walked in off the street and threw urine over diners and their food.

The family of four was enjoying a meal together at Pizza Piazza in the High Street at about 9.15pm on October 16 when they were approached at their table by the suspect, who was carrying a clear plastic bag containing what police believe to be urine.

He was heard to say "This is for you" and then threw the liquid over the family and their food. He then quickly walked out of the restaurant.

A waitress in the restaurant called the police who did not arrive immediately, leaving the family sitting in urine-soaked clothes for more than 30 minutes.

Alex Giarola, who runs the restaurant, said: "The family were just having a good time and enjoying their meal before the guy walked in.

"He was a scruffy black guy, who walked into the restaurant and straight up to the family and ignored the waitress who asked if she could help him. She was really scared by his behaviour and just let him walk out again.

According to the waitress, the family did not know the man and they were traumatised by the incident.

Mr Giarola said: "Of course we didn't charge the family for the meal, we just felt so sorry for them."

The suspect is described as a black male, around 5ft 6in, with short black hair. He was wearing a blue anorak with a red and white scarf. Anyone with information should call the Kingston Crime Management Unit on 020 8721 5868.
