Plans for a new free school have received 460 responses in just one day.

Parents have been campaigning for another secondary school in Molesey since July 2013.

Now, Cobham Free School Trust is considering expanding to a site in East Molesey.

The trust intends to apply to the Department for Education to set up a new three or four form mixed sex secondary school, to open in September 2017.

The proposal, if accepted, will help alleviate current school place pressures.

Currently, 240 pupils leave St Lawrence C of E Junior School, St Alban’s Catholic Primary School, Chandlers Field Primary School and Hurst Park Primary School each year.

The nearest high school, Esher Church of England High School, has only 210 places available, but its catchment area also includes the whole of Claygate and Esher.

Michaela Khatib, head of Cobham Free School, said that while there are hopes to establish a new school, at this stage the trust is gathering the demand within the area.

She said: “If parents are interested, we would like them to register that.”

Howard Morris, chairman of governors at Cobham Free School, said: “The school will help address the shortage of state secondary school places, which has been predicted to occur in the next few years.”

Cobham Free School, currently based at the old police station in Portsmouth Road, first opened as part of the Government’s free school programme in 2012 and expanded to include a senior department in 2014.

The proposed new secondary school, for students aged 11 to 18, would take influence from both the private and state sectors.

Mr Morris said: “We have already identified a number of possible sites in East Molesey and the surrounding area, which will allow us to fulfil our vision and look for evidence of parental demand for the school.

"We would like to hear from parents of children of all ages."
